Complete Guide to the Belgian TOB Tax

What is the TOB?

The Tax on Stock Exchange Operations (Taxe sur les Opérations de Bourse or Beurstaks) is a tax levied on the purchase and sale of financial instruments in Belgium. Since 2017, this tax also applies to transactions executed by Belgian residents through foreign intermediaries (brokers based outside Belgium).

How much do I have to pay? (2024/2025 Rates)

The rate depends on the type of financial product:

Why is currency conversion important?

If you trade US stocks (in USD) or UK stocks (in GBP), you cannot simply use the current exchange rate. The Belgian FPS Finance requires that the tax base be converted into Euros using the ECB reference rate of the transaction date.

Our calculator connects directly to the European Central Bank database to fetch the exact rate for the day you made the trade, preventing calculation errors that could lead to fines.

Declaration Deadlines

You must declare and pay the TOB by the last working day of the second month following the transaction. Example: A transaction made in January must be declared and paid by the end of March.
